Kendall County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Accident
****UPDATE****

On October 12, 2019 at approximately 1737 p.m., Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the area of River Road between Blackhawk Road and Fox River Drive, for a report involving a vehicle colliding with a wagon being towed by a tractor for a hay rack ride.

An investigation revealed Kaitlin Minick, a 22 year old female from the 800 block of West Hillcrest Drive of DeKalb. Minick was driving west on River Road, when her vehicle struck the back of the westbound hay wagon carrying a total of 14 adult passengers. Eleven passengers were transported to local area hospitals for treatment of varying degrees of injuries.

Ms. Minick was treated and released on the scene. Ms. Minick was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. This investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank Sandwich Police Department, Plano Police Department, Bristol Kendall Fire, Oswego Fire, Somonauk Fire, Newark Fire, Little Rock Fox Fire, Sugar Grove Fire and Kendall County Auxiliary Deputies.

Caroline McCree What's the speed limit there? Seems like extreme speed was probably involved if the car flipped upside down. Hope everyone involved is doing better today!

Kathryn Hothan Drove the route my son & his friend did last night. It is posted throughout 45mph. Yes, my son & his friend were in THE car. No, they were not speeding, nor was the driver texting. Blame is being placed, speculation made & no one knows for sure, as of yet, what exactly transpired. I thank God they are both alive & pray for all who were involved.

Scott Ford I've been a tow truck driver for many years, and I can tell u that cars flip at low speeds also. I had one over the summer that the speed limit was 25 and 1 car was turning and the other car struck it at just the right spot and the car turning flipped over, witnessed state they were not speeding.

Many things are in play for a car to roll over

Caroline McCree Kathryn Hothan I'm honestly not trying to blame anyone. I heard the glare from the evening sun is awful there, so I can imagine that's what the main cause was. Glad to know no one was speeding. I know bad things can happen even if everyone's doing everything right. I'm glad everyone in the car was ok. Can't even imagine how scary it is to flip over in a car!

Danielle Galante Not just the glare from the sun, but passing the trees it's like a strobe light that really messes with your eyes. I always went under speed limit when I traveled this road for that reason. People passed me up flipped me off but I don't care. Better safe then sorry. I'm just glad no one died. Horrible road.

Andrea Gudal Kim Schumpp-Kirkby, from what understand, at the time of this accident, the sun can be incredibly blinding to the driver heading in the direction of the tractor- trailer. Failure to reduce speed does not mean speeding. Let's wait for all the details to come out before vilifying this young woman.

Tom Janito Kim Schumpp-Kirkby the idea of a vehicle following with warning lights/ strobes doesn't guarantee that the following vehicle wouldn't get hit, the idea of a vehicle following a hayride type vehicle is for more advanced warning and that vehicle getting hit would be better suited in an accident than a bunch of people sitting on an open trailer with Zero Protection.

Ron Melancon Wrong...Facts are facts...no permit to be on the road. The road was never designed to be a "Hayride" attraction We have a concern that once again these "Farmers" are going to place the blame on this 22 year old driver. Another Fact is the vehicle was slow moving.....Another fact is the trailer was never designed to be used as a Hay Ride. The Ohio State Attorney General said..... A Trailer is not for people....it is only used to transport cargo not people. So we hope the driver's family gets a powerful attorney to defend her because it sounds like instead of blaming the "Farmer" for conducting illegal Amusement Rids on the highway you will be blaming the driver.

A hayride by virtue is unsafe.   Why do you ask?

One a trailer was never designed to carry people it is only to be used as moving product and equipment.

Two no formal national safety standard for any hayrides or parade floats.

Three over 20 will die each and every year and hundreds are injured each and every year.

Four we refuse to let the legal system place all the blame on the driver when nobody approved a slow moving vehicle to be on the roadway of a highway going way below the posted limit of 45 mph.

Five in fact are people not ticket when they go way below the speed limit?

The Farmer who conducted this "Hayride" amusement ride with no safety standards or permits needs to be responsible and we intend to inform all parties involved that "Hayrides" for use to the General Public needs oversight and proper enforcement by local Fire Marshalls all across the United States.
