In 1971 J. Standard Baker Quoted " Drivers Towing Trailers  Are Four (4) Times As Unsafe As Those In Cars Alone!

Cheap imports can pose a trailer load of danger7th Apr 2014 5:00 AM

DOUBLE CHECK: The Trailer Shop owner Steve Yeomans encourages people to ensure their trailers and all the accessories, such as safety chains and D shackles, meet safety requirements. Max Fleet BUNTTS

TRAILER specialists are seeing increasing numbers of vehicles that do not meet safety specifications.

The Trailer Shop owner Steve Yeomans said one of the more common problems was unsafe safety chains.

He said often the chains on trailers he saw in his business did not have the required safety stamping.

"In a lot of cases we find that the chains are not strong enough," he said.

"If the hitch breaks the safety chain is supposed to catch the trailer.

"If it's not strong enough and it breaks you have a real problem."

Mr Yeomans said another common problem was the D shackles that connected the chain to the trailer and the towing car.

"A lot of people are buying cheap D shackles that are intended for miscellaneous uses," he said. "Usually they're just not suitable."

Mr Yeomans said many people were buying cheap Chinese imports that did not meet Queensland's Main Roads rules.

There were also a lot of "backyard" manufacturers who did not know the rules.

"Any trailer up to 750kg can be self-assessed," he said.

"That means the owner can fill out the form himself and lodge it with Main Roads.

"It's a worry when you could have a two-wheeled trailer travelling at 100kmh on the highway and the safety chain breaks."

Mr Yeomans said it could be devastating for people who had just bought a trailer to bring it to him and find it needed several hundred dollars worth of work to bring it up to standard.

"There are heaps of manufacturers out there, but people need to do their homework," he said.

"People must realise you get what you pay for."

According to Transport and Main Roads Department regulations any trailer with a rigid drawbar must be fitted with safety chains marked in accordance with the relevant Australian Standard.

The length of the safety chain must prevent the trailer's drawbar hitting the ground if the trailer is detached from the towing vehicle.

The safety chains must be properly connected to the tow bar with attachments capable of withstanding the specified breaking load of each chain.

chain and was manly for show .often used around car yards pubic walkways etc .Looked menacing but had no real strength .high tensile chain is totally different to look at even then show chain

If a trailer breaks away from an Aussie made xxxx recycled Beer can Tow-ball, then don't blame the Chinese chain and D- shackle that keep the trailer attached to the tow-bar.

It's bad enough, buying Aussie hacksaw blades that snap 5 times before you cut trough a Chinese made chain...!

Don't rubbish imported stuff, look at your own produced garbage no one want's..!!
Otherwise you wouldn't drive foreign cars...!! Would you..???!!!

"look at your own produced garbage no one want's..!!" --- So now, you are not one of us? If you were, you would have said. "OUR own", instead of "your own". Cuckoo, we really gotta tighten up the immigration rules, so that we get migrants who want to be Aussies, not spongers.
Nearly 70 years of Holdens, have led the Aussie ownership race up until the last decade, BUT Holden have outsold European cars, (and that includes Mercedes Benz), year in, year out, no contest.
I note that VW Group and Daimler are losing ground across Europe, to Ford, GMH and Toyoto. Looks like most Germans like foreign cars as well little fella.

The Trailer Shop owner Steve Yeomans encourages people to ensure their trailers and all the accessories, such as safety chains and D shackles, meet safety requirements. Have you been in his shop Swampy..???
Do you know what products he sells??
Is he drumming business up for his produce with that add..???

I don't own this shop, that I can't call it "our own produce"..!!!
It is his...!
Are you gone of your rockers or something; coming up with discriminatory remarks against my fact's ..???

JUST compare the 22.68 million (2012) Australian and European population 739.2 million (2011) that Holden have outsold European cars, (and that includes Mercedes Benz), year in, year out, no contest. You talking out your bum about our poor unemployable and 60% welfare recipients in Australia, no wonder Holden and Ford gone broke!!!
They should have used German quality hacksaw blades to keep their people employed.

You can't change the facts Cuckoo, with any amount of ranting!
Fact - Holden have sold more cars in Australia than VW and Daimler combined.
Fact - 73% of all cars sold in Germany are imports, the likes of Ford, GMC and Toyota, whilst VW / Daimler are losing ground.
Finally, No, I have not gone off my rockers, just because I state facts, rather than fiction, you say i am "discriminatory"?
Hang on, how can Ford and Holden (GMC), have gone broke, when they are in Europe out-selling your local cars? Ahhh, another Cuckoo falsehood! Back in your lunchbox !

Ha hahahahahah hit the nail on the head...!!
May I add Sikaflex and Nylon Bolts on Holden and scotch-locked wiring with cardboard interior trims on Ford.
The best are the silastic glued windows falling off the winder hinge on pothole roads... Ha hahaha typical Ford...!
The Jap's won't touch a Ford or Holden with a 10 foot pole..!!
Never...!

If the hitch breaks, I have never had a hitch break in how many years, if the hitch breaks, then it doesnt matter how good or bad the safety chains are, if it breaks from excess stress, weight or pressure then reality tells you no safety chain is going to help, antiquated system of connecting a trailer to a vehicle, probably ok if you live in a swamp.

We already know!!! the United States advocate the deaths of over 400 a years. They advocate 19,500 injuries ,,,,, they advocate 12 states have NO REGISTRATIONS AND ADVOCATE 8 states with no SAFETY CHAIN LAW. !!! So you can attach a trailer with DUCT TAPE!!! Google. Dells used duct tape and the go to dangerous trailers.org and know that even Henrico County Virginia does nothing but prevent us from saving lives

Interesting, to think Americans would have common sense but as you say they don't. (Everything is attached with Duct tape and fencing wire..)
That explains why Australia is following them in every way as possible....!
The only Australian State, "Victoria" is the only place where Box trailers are unregistered and are kept that way which in my opinion - is and would be another money grab.
But from my experience Victorians got more brain then the rest of Australian states when it comes to common sense. No wonder most trucking firms register their trailers in Victoria or South Australia.
Say no more...! We live within Slavelandia's two party political Mafia's.
