A horse trailer being pulled by a southbound pickup shed a wheel that bounced across Interstate 81 and went through the windshield of a northbound tractor-trailer (pictured). The unidentifed driver, who was working for Timco Logistics Systems out of Texas, died at the scene.
Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Carpentieri said the 2007 Volvo tractor-trailer then struck a guard rail and that the driver died at the scene. He would not speculate about the cause of death but said the tire would have been traveling with great force.
He did not identify the driver, who was working for Timco Logistics Systems out of Texas.
He said the driver of the 1999 Ford pickup is from the Roanoke area and has been charged with operating with defective equipment.

Ronald Ressler, of North Lawrence, was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado towing a 31-foot livestock utility trailer, whose wheel came off and struck 32-year-old Lori Ann Clegg’s car, killing her, according to the Northwest Regional Lancaster County Police Department.
Ressler's vehicle was traveling east on Route 283 when a wheel came off his trailer a short distance west of the Route 743 exit, went across the grass median strip and smashed into Clegg's 2009 Honda Accord, police said. Clegg was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police said Ressler initiated contact and has been cooperative. Ressler does not face criminal charges, but was charged with vehicle code violations unrelated to the crash, Todd Brown, an assistant Lancaster County district attorney, told the York Daily Record.
