Dear Mr. Melancon:
Thank you for contacting my office to express your concerns about traffic and trailer safety. I appreciate your taking the time to share your concerns with me.
As you know, traffic accidents take the lives of thousands of Americans each year. I agree with you that roadways safety needs to
be improved. I think that increased
freight rail usage would help take more trucks of our roads, improving roadway
safety. Higher fines, a safe speed trucking law, and trailer
safety regulations as you proposed, might also help make our roadways
safer. Please keep in mind,
however, that regulations of this matter are largely a state issue. I would encourage you to also contact the
Governor's office, as well as your representatives in the Virginia General
Assembly. Should this matter arise
before the United States Congress, please be assured that your experiences and
suggestions will be very helpful to me.
Thank you again for contacting me and my staff on this important matter, and we will consider your idea as we consider transportation safety issues. We appreciate your correspondence and hope that you will not hesitate to share your views with us on this and other matters in the future.
I
would also invite you to visit my website at www.webb.senate.gov for regular updates about my activities and positions on matters
that are important to Virginia and our nation.
Sincerely,
Jim
Webb
