BBQ smoker trailer detaches from SUV, kills woman in another vehicle

A barbecue smoker detached from a vehicle that had been carrying it on Tuesday night and traveled into another vehicle, killing its driver.

Richard McReynolds, 42, of Orlando, towed the smoker on a trailer attached to his 1998 Lincoln Navigator about 10:21 p.m. on Old Winter Garden Road near Deleon Avenue when it became detached.

The smoker-trailer then traveled across the roadway and crashed into the front left side of a 1988 Ford Mustang, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The Mustang's driver, Wanda Evette Keyes, 41, of Orlando, died at the scene.

Charges in the crash are pending, according to FHP

The Follow Up!!!

Mr. Melancon,

I just spoke with the investigator and she has completed her investigation.  The driver of the vehicle towing the bar-b-que pit was shown at fault in the investigation.  He was issued four citations (tickets). These are all traffic citations and he will have a mandatory court appearance before a judge for failure to secure a load on a vehicle.

Dear Utility Trailer Safety Advocate:

You need to know that our organization sat in a meeting with the Virginia State Police, Department Of Motor Vehicles, Deputy Secretary David Tyeryar and we had two experts in attendance.

Here is the evidence if they say the meeting never happened:

Great - set for Friday, Sept 16th, at 11 a.m. as below.  Please enter the DMV building and the security guard will direct you to the Executive Conference room for the meeting.  Please let me know if I can provide anything further.

Best regards,
Georgia

In this meeting the Virginia State Police Stated that they do a fine job with inspections yet when you look at the yellow trailer attached to the yellow truck you will see a recent inspection that took place on 6/11!!!

You will then notice that the tire is bald!!!! Look at the safety chains and breakaway cable...wow how in the world did it pass?

Then you will see yet another DOUBLE AXLE TRAILER that has expired in 8/10 and we ask are the police and DMV doing an Excellent job?  Why is this dangerous trailer allowed to be on the road?

Then you will see yet another trailer with a hitch that is starting to fail!!!!!  NO INSPECTIONS,,,,,NO STANDARDS,,,,NO QUALITY CONTROL ON ALL HITCHES IN THE UNITED STATES.

So we ask...this very same Department of Motor Vehicles and Virginia State Police have no clue about the dangerous conditions of these trailers because they simply do NOT WANT TO ENFORCE SAFETY WITH TRAILERS.

They let anybody call a total dangerous car that is 25 years old and allow them to slap on a abused  "Antique Tag"  and the abused "Farm Tag"  you never have to get a 25 year old car inspected.

Then they let you steal a trailer and call it homemade and you can get a new vin number on your stolen trailer.

You need to know that instead of embracing our concerns your Government has decided to prevent  our concerns from being addressed.

Who needs to loose their lives next.....see these to massive coverups and total disregard for the public with "Passenger Cars That Tow Trailers"

and the loss of a life of Elaine Decker....Governor Kaine got this report and he did NOTHING.

Sincerely,

Ron J. Melancon

Horse killed when trailer rolls in Wittmann

WITTMANN -- A horse trailer with three horses inside rolled over in the West Valley Friday morning.

It happened at about 8:30 a.m. near Grand Avenue and Patton Road in Wittmann. Fire crews from Surprise responded to the scene.

Emergency crews were able to extricate two of the horses. Aerial video showed crews walking those horses around. A third animal did not survive the wreck.

Lanes were restricted in both directions for a time.

According to Chief Eddie Rios  of the Wittmann Fire Department, it looks like the hitch connecting the trailer to the motor home that was hauling it came undone. The trailer detached and rolled over.

The motor home was traveling eastbound between Wittmann and Sun City.

There's no word on the condition of the driver.

Officer Robert Bailey of the Department of Public Safety said this it not the first time time kind of accident has happened.

"Last month, we had that happen here near the 202 and I-10, some people pulling two Clydesdales that came off the trailer," he said. "It happens from time to time."

Bailey said it's possible that the safety chains on the hitch might have snapped.

"A lot of times, it's operator error," Bailey said. "And they might not have strong enough safety chains. Those safety chains often snap, especially with those heavy horses."
