LSU professor killed, son hurt in I-12 crash
Author: WILLIAM PACK
A runaway, open-body utility trailer careened across the Interstate 12
median into oncoming traffic, killing a noted LSU English professor and
injuring her son Monday, authorities said.
Josephine Roberts won the LSU Foundation Distinguished Faculty Award in
1989 and has held the distinguished William A. Read Professorship in
English since 1991.
She was pronounced dead at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center
at 12:10 p.m., or about 90 minutes after the accident in the eastbound
lanes of I-12, said City Police Cpl. Don Kelly.
John Gaines, 14, remained in Our Lady of the Lake's pediatric intensive
care unit Monday night.
A hospital supervisor said he was in stable condition.
Roberts' husband, James F. Gaines, a professor of foreign language at
Southeastern Louisiana University, said the two were heading home
Monday when the accident occurred between Drusilla and Essen.
Kelly said an empty trailer towed by Verna Breeland in a pickup broke
loose, crossed the grassy median and slammed almost head-on into the
eastbound 1988 Toyota Camry driven by Roberts, 47.
Fire Department spokesman Larry Mounce said rescue workers needed
special equipment to free Roberts from the vehicle.
He said her son was out before rescuers started.
Breeland, 35, 17417 Ashton Ave., Greenwell Springs, was not involved in
the accident, Kelly said.
He said no tickets were issued Monday.
Sgt. Kerry Clarke said police were examining equipment on the trailer
to determine why it broke free.
Roberts, who lived at 464 Wilton in Baton Rouge, used her maiden named
professionally, her husband said.
LSU English department Chairman J. Gerald Kennedy said Roberts, who had
been with the university since 1975, was recognized for Renaissance
scholarship and had done studies on both Shakespeare and Sir Philip
Sydney.
"But she was best known, and internationally known, for her work on
women writers in the Renaissance, especially Lady Mary Wroth," said
Kennedy.
"She was also a superb teacher and an exemplary, gracious colleague
whose loss to this department and to the university is devastating."
Roberts was a magna cum laude graduate of the College of William and
Mary in 1970 who received her master's and doctorate degrees from the
University of Pennsylvania.
She received the South-Central Modern Language Association and Newberry
Library Fellowship in 1988, the same year she won the American
Philosophical Society Fellowship.
The accident closed an eastbound lane of the interstate for several
hours Monday morning until the police completed their investigation.
