Jim Ryan is such a careful guy, sometimes he drives his wife nuts.
Marie Ryan remembers the family preparing for a vacation in northern Minnesota in the early 1980s with her husband's sisters and their families. They were to ride up in two vans, one towing a U-Haul trailer piled high with luggage and bicycles.
All were itching to get on the road, but Jim Ryan wanted to rethink the trailer idea.
"He said, 'I'm telling you, that thing cannot hold what it's got. This is not a good idea. . . . Let's think about this a little bit,' " she remembers. "And I'm like, 'Come on, come on.' . . . We put him in the back seat of the van. And the whole time he's grouchy. He's saying, 'I'm telling you. This does not look right.' "
Sure enough, out on the road, the trailer comes loose. "We see the U-Haul passing us," she said, laughing. "And the bikes are falling, the luggage is falling. It was a nightmare.
