Hackett woman injured in collision Corey S. Krasko / Times Record
CAROLE KATTE,
The passenger of a vehicle that spun out of control on an interstate
Tuesday had to be freed by rescue personnel after her legs were pinned
and she was trapped inside the vehicle.
Tina Stephens, 27, of Hackett was pinned in a truck for about 20
minutes on Interstate 540 after the vehicle struck a guardrail and then
a tractor-trailer rig on the I-540 bridge.
Richard L. Bruner, 63, of Hackett was driving west in the truck,
pulling a homemade trailer down the right lane of the interstate when
the front axle of the trailer came loose, said trooper Robert Mulac of
the Arkansas State police.
Mulac said the loose axle caused Bruner to swerve out of control, first
striking the north guardrail of the bridge and then the tractor-trailer
rig, which was also traveling west.
Mulac said Bruner's truck hit the tractor-trailer, which was driven by
Clifton R. Hicks, 49, of Alma, at a 90-degree angle, causing the truck
and trailer to jackknife, blocking both lanes of traffic.
Stephens, who was not wearing her seat belt, was thrown forward in the
truck and trapped between the dashboard and the air conditioner/heater
duct.
A rescue team from the Fort Smith Fire Department was called and had
Stephens free from the wreckage within about 20 minutes, Mulac said.
She was transported by emergency personnel to a local hospital.
Mulac said Stephens was the only person injured in the accident and her
injuries appeared to be minor.

Trial ordered in fatal crash
Author: The Grand Rapids Press
A Newaygo man was ordered to stand trial on two counts of negligent
homicide for an October crash.
Eugene Lord, 57, could face up to two years in prison if convicted for
his role in the Oct. 26 crash in Solon Township.
Jasper "Buck" Smith, 78, of Cedar Springs, was driving on Algoma Avenue
NE just south of 22 Mile Road with his nephew, 42-year-old Dennis Dean
Smith in a pickup truck when they were struck by an 18-foot trailer
that had broken loose from the dump truck Lord was driving.
The trailer was carrying a backhoe, and was connected to the dump truck
by a ball-style hitch. Police said Lord didn't use safety chains.
As the dump truck was passing the northbound pickup, investigators say
the trailer broke free and hit the pickup head-on, pushing it into a
tree-filled ditch and pinning the truck's occupants inside.
